Plants, Seeds, More

An emerging ginseng plant in a pot. I don’t usually have much luck with these. They are very susceptible to fungus diseases.

Richter’s is a good place to buy ginseng plants and seeds. Harding’s Ginseng Farm is also a good place to buy them, and Larry Harding also has various sizes of rootlets. The seeds and rootlets are best planted in the fall.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

Plants, Seeds, More!

A few photos of the rather large Siberian ginseng bush in my backyard.  The plant is not in the Panax genus and is also known as eleuthero.  I purchased it from Richters as a small plant.  It is quite happy in partial shade. I have not been able to germinate any seeds yet, but it may take a few years.  Maybe some passed through the birds and will sprout in other parts of the neighborhood, but people might not recognize it and may declare it a weed.

The root is used medicinally, but it is my only plant and I do not wish to destroy it for the root.  I am researching the use of the leaves and berries.  If you have any knowledge, please pass it along.

Urban Ginseng

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I have planted 100′s of seeds and maybe 40 ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) rootlets over the past 3 years.  I do not have much to show for my efforts.  The plant is fussy, and susceptible to fungus diseases, but I think the biggest problem is that the seeds and roots are tasty to critters.  Here are a few that came up this year.  I d not know for certain, but I suspect the plant is capable of storing enough energy in its root to survive at least a year without producing leaves in the case of drought.
